Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is an independent, research-driven graduate-level university focused on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. Established by Abu Dhabi as an ongoing collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), it serves as a “knowledge-hub” for the region and works towards creating indigenous R&D capabilities, while addressing regionally-relevant issues.
Masdar Institute’s mission is in keeping with the ideals of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, who believed strongly in responsible conservation, sustainable development and education. Dedicated to the science and engineering of advanced alternative energy, environmental technologies and sustainability, it offers eight Master’s degree programs and a Foundation Program to give UAE Nationals a year of study to refresh and expand their knowledge ahead of their degree programs.
With research taking up 50% of the students’ and faculty’s time, ground-breaking research work is currently underway in more than 150 different projects. Masdar Institute prepares students to be innovators, creative scientists, researchers and critical thinkers in technology development, systems integration and policy.
With clean technology at its core and innovation at every turn, the Masdar Institute campus is not only the perfect place to study sustainability, but it is also an inspiring place to live sustainably. The campus includes laboratories, student apartments, classrooms, faculty offices and other amenities and has been built to consume 55% less in cooling demand than a conventional building of its size, 54% less potable water, 51% less electricity and has a 75% waste-heat recovery.
